Project Types

Access Control

A Compound Access Control (CAC) provides a secure means of access and egress to the campus for both vehicles and pedestrians. There are four types of CACs: pedestrian only, vehicle only, pedestrian-vehicle combined and service CAC. All types are required to comply with the ABA guidelines.

Office

A Chancery, Consulate or Office Annex, are places in which the business of an Embassy is conducted. All are required to comply with ABA guidelines. Refer to OBO specific Scoping Requirements for individual exceptions.

Recreational

Recreational facilities are provided on compounds where the local climate and site allow. Recreational buildings and spaces include cabaƱas, swimming pools, recreation courts and paths. All areas for recreation and entertainment are required to comply with the ABA requirements.

Residential

There are two housing types at U.S. diplomatic missions: representational and non-representational. Representational residences are provided for the Chiefs of Mission and their deputies at Embassies, and Consul Generals at Consulates. These houses frequently host official diplomatic events and for this reason ABA compliance is essential. Non-representational residences include housing for American Embassy employees, Staff Officer
Residences and Marine Security Guard Residences (MSGR). MSGRs are required to comply with the ABA guidelines in all public areas. It is recommended that the OBO Scoping Requirements be reviewed carefully.

Service

Buildings within this category consist of warehouses, GSO shops, utility buildings, demarcation buildings and parking facilities. All are required to comply with the ABA guidelines to varying degrees. It is recommended that the OBO Scoping Requirements be reviewed carefully.

Site/Compound

Often, there are multiple building types on an Embassy Compound. The spaces between these
buildings, all landscape and hardscape, are required to comply with ABA guidelines just as the buildings themselves. It is important that public spaces are safely shared by pedestrians and vehicles, and the ABA guidelines play a significant role in this aspect of design.
